The afternoon passed more slowly than the morning and Adrian had to keep reminding himself that they were making progress. He couldn't afford to move any faster and risk overlooking even the smallest danger.

Both his shoulder and back screamed in agony, but he forced himself to press onward, thinking of Skylar and Jack. Behind him, Phoenix emitted small huffs and groans of impatience that echoed the emotions seeping uncontrollably from her, washing over him.

"Why don't we go that way?" Phoenix asked as he cut away another small limb blocking their path. He paused to look where she pointed and saw the small opening he'd purposely avoided through the undergrowth.

"Not a good idea."

"Why?"

Picking up a good-sized fallen limb, he walked over to the small, sandy stretch of path and tossed the limb onto it. For a moment, the limb lay there. Then the ground started moving in small rolling waves. As the grains of sand boiled and shifted, the limb slowly sank until it disappeared and the ground looked calm and peaceful once again.

Beside him, Phoenix gasped and clutched his arm.

"That's why it's important that you step where I do and stay on a path covered with undergrowth." He went back to where he'd left off and continued to cut a trail for them.

"Do you think Jack fell into one of those?" Her words were barely above a whisper as she voiced one of his gravest fears.

"I don't know," he replied honestly.

For another hour, they worked their way slowly through the jungle. Adrian had shifted the machete to his other hand some time ago and now that arm and shoulder ached as much as the other, further slowing their progress.

"Do you want me to do that?" Phoenix offered.

"No."

He could tell his blunt refusal irritated her, but frankly, he was too tired and in too much pain to be diplomatic. He hacked at another branch, feeling like his muscles moved in slow motion.

"Look, you can't even lift the machete anymore. I don't see how I'll do any worse."

He turned to glare at her and saw her chin lift a notch in defiance. Well, if she thought she could do it, he'd bloody-well let her try. Without saying a word, he handed her the machete and took the backpack. Then he switched places with her, letting her take the lead.

"Don't touch that," he said when he saw her reach out to grab the vines hanging in their path with her free hand. "You don't know if it's poisonous or not, and besides, if you hold that, you might cut off your arm. Make diagonal cuts and keep the blade out in front of you. Can't have you swing it down and accidentally cut off your leg."

She glared at him. "Do you mind? I think I know how to use one of these. Cutting away vines and undergrowth is not a difficult concept to grasp."

He held out his arm for her to proceed and watched her lift the blade, this time without grabbing the
